About the Author

Alec L. is a recovering Pushkin and an aspiring Solzhenitsyn. After a summer in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia, he’s neither tender-footed tourist nor hardened Russophile, but is as of now gainfully unemployed in St. Petersburg, accruing language experience, life points and a leathery skin against the cold. Most importantly, he is deep into the love-hate-scrape-your-face-on-tree-bark relationship with Russia that’s so typical of Russo-American relations. He’ll tell you about it, should you choose to read more …

Favorite Music:

See the cold, hard truth of his mp3 player’s shuffle function: Meshuggah, Coheed and Cambria, The Basement Tapes, Trey Anastasio, Prince, Tom Petty, Radiohead, Girl Talk.  Way into Lamb of God right now.

Aspirations in Life:

Write like Tom Wolfe, bitch like Joan Didion and party like Hunter S. Thompson. And, in fact, write like all three of them, decked out in white, pin-stripe jacket and Bermuda shorts, chain-smoking cigarettes with his nose turned up.

  1. Stephen Streed Says:

    Alec,

Just saw the movie Trans-Siberian with Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer. Gave one the feeling that Russia is up for grabs in the way that America is up for grabs. What is the difference between autocracy, anarchy and plutocracy. When will money work, when justice, when power.

  2. Alec: I think you chose excellent authors to emulate in your Aspirations. I find it interesting that all three are from other eras–closer to mine than to yours. Are there authors of the same stature and prowess writing today as Wolfe, Didion and Thompson? I wouldn’t know, so maybe not. Interesting.

  3. I’m jealous, you’re living in one of the best cities on earth. I went to St. Petersburg for one week, and ended up staying two and a half years!

Hi Alec, Jen here, formerly Kotajarvi. I’m very happy I was introduced to your blog, and look forward to reading it in my free time to gain some cultural insight. I find it most intruiging because if I remember correctly, we have vastly different political and social views. I wish you well in your travels and studies. Have a good day!

  5. Hi Alec, I hope you don’t mind me contacting you through the comments … I am looking for guest bloggers to post on our blog during the Macmillan Dictionary’s celebration of ‘Russian-English’ month in May. I’d love to tell you more. If you are interested, please contact me at the address I have given. Take care, Laine
